What is a Chipit?

A Chipit is a Pit Bull Mixed with Chihuahua. This half Chihuahua half Pitbull crossbreed is a designer breed that combines the best traits of the Chihuahua and the American Pit Bull Terrier.

Chihuahua Mixed with Pitbull is described as being active, protective, and sociable creatures that is believed to have originated in the United States in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

What is a Pitbull Chihuahua Mix called?

Many designer dogs have been given cute nicknames, like the Goldendoodle for the Golden Retriever and Poodle mix, or the BoChi for the Boston Terrier and Chihuahua Mix.

But, what do you call a Pitbull Chihuahua Mix for short?

Calling them the Pitbull dog Mixed with Chihuahua can be quite a mouthful, so many have given them nicknames, such as Chitpit, Chitbull, Pihuahua, or Pithuahua.

Chihuahua Pitbull Mix: Parent breeds

Pitbull Terrier and Chihuahua Mix is a crossbreed without any fixed standards regarding their look and temperament. To predict how the offspring will turn out, it is useful to look into their parental origins.

The Chihuahua is one of the tiniest and oldest dog breeds in the world. They are known for their feisty demeanor that often has a confident and big-dog attitude.

Chihuahuas have a compact body with an apple-shaped head, erect ears, and round, expressive eyes. They are very alert and tend to form a close bonds with one person.

The American Pit Bull Terrier, on the other hand, is a medium-sized dog with a muscular build and a short, smooth coat. They are often branded as aggressive because of their strong physique and confidence, but it really boils down to the responsibility of the owner to give them early training and socialization.

The American Pit Bull Terrier, or APBT for short, is a hardworking dog that shows natural agility and enthusiasm that is easy to train, and who has a strong willingness to work.

Chihuahua history

A Chihuahua standing on a wooden tree bark

The Chihuahua originated from Mexico and descended from the larger Techichi breed that was the favorite of the Toltec people that lived in central Mexico between the 10th and 12th centuries.

When the Aztecs dominated Mexico during the 14th century, they further refined the Techichi into tinier and lighter dogs.

After the Aztec’s fall, these tiny dogs survived in small numbers mainly in the Chihuahua region of modern Mexico where they got their name. They were first registered in the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1904.

Pitbull history

American Staffordshire Terrier with blue eyes

The bull and terrier dogs who arrived from the British Isles in the 19th century were the ancestors of the American Pit Bull Terrier.

When the bloodsport of bull and bear baiting was outlawed, they were eventually utilized as companions and working dogs to move livestock and hunt hogs.

In 1898, the breed was recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) but not by the AKC due to its affiliation with dog fighting.

Chihuahua vs Pitbull

The main difference between Chihuahua and Pitbull is that Chihuahua is much smaller having an average height of 6 to 9 inches while Pitbull is a medium-sized dog that stands between 14 and 24 inches at the withers

Various Pitbull breeds mixed with Chihuahua

The American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bully, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and the American Bulldog, as well as hybrids that share the physical characteristics of the Pit Bull, are among the dog breeds that are descended from bulldog and terrier mixes in the United States.

The Chihuahua mixed with Pitbull can therefore be further classified into different crossbreeds other than the American Pit Bull Terrier Chihuahua Mix.

American Pit Bull Terrier Chihuahua Mix

In general, when people refer to the Pit Bull Terrier Chihuahua Mix, what they really mean is that it is an American Pitbull Terrier Chihuahua Mix.

The American Pitbull Chihuahua Mix shows great similarity with a Chihuahua mixed with an American Staffordshire Terrier in terms of looks and temperament.

The difference between the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) and the American Staffordshire Terrier is that the latter is stockier and said to be much more good-natured.

American Bully Chihuahua Mix

Chihuahua Bully Mix or the Bully and Chihuahua Mix is a crossbreed between the Chihuahua and the American Bully.

Bully Chihuahua Mix is nicknamed the Bully Chi and it has a muscular build with a head that resembles the Chihuahua which is rounder.

Bully Chihuahua combines the wariness of the Chihuahua to strangers with the strength and courage of the American Bully making them great watchdogs.

Pocket Bully Chihuahua Mix

Chihuahuas are often mixed with the type of American Bully called the Pocket Bully due to its smaller size. Pocket Bullies range in height from 14 to 17 inches compared to the Standard Bully which is 17 to 20 inches.

What does a Chihuahua and Pitbull Mix look like?

Chihuahua and Pitbull Mix typically has the muscular and strong physique of the Pitbull and the rounded head of the Chihuahua.

Chihuahua & Pitbull Mix physical appearance

It is hard to predict how a Pit Mix Chihuahua will turn out. Its muzzle size can vary since the Chihuahua has a shorter and pointier nose. The ears can also be either erect or half-prick or rose in shape.

Pitbull Chihuahua Mix characteristics

A Pithuahua can be expected to be considerably hyper and intelligent since both its parents are active and likes to be kept occupied.

How big do Chihuahua Pitbull Mixes get?

Since the Pitbull and the Chihuahua have a considerable size difference, it can be hard to predict how big a full grown Chipit will be when it matures.

A Pithuahua full grown size will depend largely on which genes are more dominant.

Some Pit Bull and Chihuahua Mix will be diminutive in size and some puppies may grow into larger-sized dog that owners may find surprising.

Chihuahua Pitbull Mix size, height, and weight

Pitbull Chihuahua Mix size is that of a medium-sized dog. A male Pit Bull Chihuahua is typically heavier and more muscular than a female Chihuahua and a Pitbull Mix.

A full grown Chihuahua Pitbull Mix may continue to increase in weight until their 18th month as they fill out their chests, but the gain should not be very significant.

An indication that a puppy is not yet a full grown Chipit dog is to check the size of their paws. If it appears oversized, then it is a sign that they are still adolescents.

Mini Pitbull Chihuahua Mix

Miniature Pitbull Chihuahua Mix is a mix of the Chihuahua and a Pocket or Miniature Pitbull, which is a cross between an American Pitbull Terrier and the Patterdale Terrier.

The Miniature Pitbull has a height of 12 to 16 inches and weighs 11 to 22 pounds.

When mixed with a Chihuahua, the resulting Chihuahua Mix Pitbull may have a height of 10 to 14 inches.

Chihuahua Pitbull Mix temperament and personality

Chihuahua Pit Bull Mix or Chihuahua Pit is a loyal and affectionate dog.

Chihuahua Mix Pitbull puppies may inherit the overprotective and animated nature of the Chihuahua, so early socialization is very important.

Pitbull and Chihuahua puppies should also not be left alone for long periods for they may develop unwanted barking habits as they mature.

Handy Hint: If your Chihuahua Pitbull Mix is prone to separation anxiety or is an aggressive chewer, don’t fret. One way to help with this is to get all-natural dog bones or indestructible dog toys. These bones and toys can help distract your pups when you’re leaving or help them release some of that stress and anxiety through chewing.

Are Pitbull Chihuahuas aggressive?

They can be aggressive if not properly socialized and trained at an early age.

Is Chihuahua Mix with a Pitbull a good family dog?

Chihuahua and Pitbull is a very loyal dog and can be a great watchdog. Chipits dogs are active and playful so they can be a good playmate for older children, although it is always best to have adult supervision to prevent any accidents since they can be quite powerful.

Chihuahua and Pitbull puppies should be trained and socialized early in order for them to get along with other pets. Otherwise, they can act aggressively toward other pets.

Pit Chihuahua Mix puppies should be exposed to other pets when they are 8 to 12 weeks old.

Pitbull and Chihuahua friends

Some may wonder if the two breeds can get along or can the Chihuahua and Pitbull friends?

Although the two breeds may get along, it can be difficult and at times dangerous.

The Chihuahua has a tendency to be feisty and snappy when confronted with a bigger and more powerful dog like the Pitbull which could lead to injuring the Chihuahua.

Mix Chihuahua and Pitbull ideal living conditions

Chi Pit Mix or Chiwawa Pit Mix are quite active dogs that need a good amount of space where they can roam around.

So if you have a large backyard, it’s a good idea to let your Pitbull Chihuahua Mix roam freely in your yard so they can play and walk around. This will help them expend some of that pent up energy.

If you do let them play outside, make sure your backyard is fully fenced so your pups are safe and sound.

We do want you to be aware that some towns or counties may have zoning laws that prohibit the installation of physical fences. If this is the case, don’t worry.

A great alternative would be to install a wireless dog fence which will also keep your K9 friends safe and contained within your backyard.

What’s great about the invisible doggy fence is that it is cost-efficient, flexible, and adaptable to any and all types of terrains, including hilly, mountainous, and flat grassy terrains.

Also, Pitbull and Chihuahua Mix puppies may not tolerate cold temperatures well. You may have to put on a shirt on your Chipit puppy to keep them warm.

But generally, they eventually can stand cold weather as they mature.

Pitbull and Chihuahua Mix training

Pitbull Mixed with a Chihuahua is generally easy to train. Using positive reinforcements or reward-based training is the best tool you can use in training a Pit Bull and Chihuahua mix.

Chihuahua Mix with Pitbull puppies can be trained as early as 8 weeks old with basic command cues.

Chihuahua Mixed with Pitbull puppies should also be leash-trained early since they have a tendency to get excited when taken for walks.

Pitbull Mixed Chihuahua exercise requirement

Chi Pit dog needs between 30 to 60 minutes of daily exercise. You can take your Chiwawa and Pitbull mix for a long run or engage them in a mentally stimulating game like fetching or catching a frisbee.

Pithuahua puppies should not be exercised rigorously as their bones and muscles are still developing.

You can calculate the right amount of exercise for your Pitbull Chihuahua puppy by multiplying 5 minutes for every month of age.

If you let your Pitbull mixed Chihuahua play outside in your backyard during the day, it may be a good idea to install an electronic dog door which will allow your furry friends to head outside whenever he wants and come back into the house when he is ready.

What’s great about the automatic doggy door is that it is easy to program and dog owners can easily set curfew hours.

This way, whether you work from home or at the office, your four-legged friends can now head outside and get some fresh air during the day while staying safe indoors at night.

Pitbull Chihuahua grooming and cleaning

A Pit Mixed with Chihuahua is pretty much easy to groom and clean.

A Chihuahua Mixed with a Pitbull has a short coat that does not require a great deal of your time to brush and de-mat its coat.

Still, it’s a good practice to teach your Chihuahua Pitbull puppies how to be comfortable during the grooming process.

If the Pitbull Chihuahua puppies cooperates while being groomed and cleaned, show your appreciation by giving them rewards in the form of treats or plenty of hugs and kisses.

Bathing

Fortunately, a Pitbull Chihuahua mix does not need to be bathed on a weekly basis.

In fact, frequent bathing will strip off its natural oil which leads to skin drying and a dull coat.

Once a month or even less is recommended for a short-haired Pitbull Chihuahua Mix.

Use a dog shampoo that is formulated with dog-friendly ingredients.

In between bath times, you can wipe its coat with alcohol-free doggie wipes to clean its skin and coat.

Brushing

Avoid using hard-bristled brushes on your Pitbull Chihuahua mix because it may cause pain and discomfort to a short-haired dog like a Chipit.

Instead, you can use a slicker brush or soft-bristled brush to distribute the natural oil around its body.

Another good choice is a round pin brush that is softly coated on the tip making it gentle on the skin.

Fortunately, the coat of a Pitbull Chihuahua is not prone to matting, hence, you do not have to devote a longer time brushing your dog.

Nail Trimming

One of the difficult parts in dog grooming is nail trimming. Owners should gradually train Chihuahua Pitbull puppies how to be comfortable during nail trimming sessions.

Ideally, this should be done within the first few weeks upon bringing home your puppy.

Use a sharp nail trimmer for dogs and clip only the tip portion to avoid hurting your puppy.

The idea is to let the puppy get used to it. Now if you have a super anxious puppy, the next best thing is to use a dog nail grinder

Teeth Brushing

Oral health is as important as coat care. Cleaning the teeth and gums of your dog will delay the onset of periodontal diseases.

The best type of toothpaste for dogs is enzymatic toothpaste because it’s made of natural ingredients.

It is highly effective in freshening your dog’s breath and in preventing tartar accumulation.

To make his teeth cleaner, you can let him enjoy dental chews to further improve your dog’s teeth and gum health.

Ear/Eye Cleaning

Did you know that one sign of ear infection is excessive ear wax?

So, make it a habit to inspect your dog’s ears and clean them with gentle ear drops for dogs or ear/eye wipes.

Wiping off debris and ear wax will stop bacterial and fungal infections.

The same can be said with eye care. Wipe clean debris on the eyes because these may irritate the eyes.

Is a Pitbull Chihuahua Mix hypoallergenic?

No, a half Pit half Chihuahua is not hypoallergenic. A Chihuahua Pit Bull may be short-haired, but their dander and saliva can cause allergic reactions in some persons.

If you or anyone in your family has canine allergy or is sensitive to dog allergy, it’s a good idea to place several air purifiers throughout your home.

Many prefer air purifiers that have a HEPA filter because it effectively removes odor, germs, pollen, mold, dander, dust, dust mites, and dog fur from the air.

Do Pitbull Chihuahua Mix shed?

While a Chipit dog breed may be short-haired, they still shed.

However, Chipits dog do not shed as profusely as double-coated and long-haired dogs.

If you’re annoyed by the amount of fur on your sofa, carpet, hardwood floor, or furniture throughout the year, it is a good idea to invest in a powerful and durable vacuum cleaner.

With two dogs in our home, we recommend the Miele Vacuum Cleaner because it quiet, durable, and can seamlessly vacuum between hardwood floors and carpet.

They also features various crevice tools which will allow you to vacuum hard to reach areas.
