In this article, we discuss everything you need to know about the Chihuahua Husky Mix – from their size, temperament, grooming needs, health issues, and more!

What is a Chihuahua Husky Mix?

Chihuahua Husky Breed

Dog breeders are always coming up with new and bizarre mixed breed dogs. One such mix is the Siberian Husky Chihuahua Mix.

On paper, a Husky Mixed with a Chihuahua doesn’t make much sense since these dogs are nothing alike. Yet when you combine them to make a Siberian Husky and Chihuahua Mix, you get a gorgeous dog that you can’t help but fall in love with.

Crossbred dogs have multiple interesting names. So, what is a Husky Chihuahua Mix called other than Chihuahua and Husky Mix?

Well, you can call them the Chiwawa Husky Mix, ChiHusky, Siberian Husky cross Chihuahua, Chiwawa and Husky Mix, Chihuahua cross Husky, or any other name you can come up with for a Chihuahua Mixed with a Husky.

The primary reason for breeding Chihuahuas that look like Huskies is to provide companionship for people living in small houses and not wanting a large dog.

Husky Chihuahua Mixes are perfect because they’re easier to handle than regular Huskies but not delicate and sensitive like Chihuahuas.

When breeding dogs with size differences, it’s always advisable for the larger dog to be the mother. A smaller dog won’t have enough room for the larger dog’s babies, and it would be a complicated pregnancy likely to end in miscarriage.

The challenge when breeding a half Husky half Chihuahua is the size difference between the two breeds. Chihuahuas are tiny toy dogs, whereas Huskies are medium-large dogs.

The Chihuahua Husky Mix is therefore produced by artificial methods.

Husky vs Chihuahua

When mixing two dogs, it helps to know their similarities and differences to predict what their cross would be like.

Since Chihuahuas and Huskies are two very different dog breeds, their mix has an exciting blend of characteristics.

Chihuahua Husky Mix physical appearance

As with most mixed breeds, the Chihuahua Husky Mix can take after either parent. They can look like a Miniature Husky or a big Chihuahua, or they could look like a new kind of dog. Needless to say, you will get a unique, one-of-a-kind pet.

Chihuahua Husky Mix coat colors

Huskies have thick, medium-length coats that protect them from the frigid cold environment of Alaska and Siberia.

In contrast, Chihuahuas have medium or short coats, and they do best in warm conditions.

Chihuahuas come in every color imaginable. Huskies have a signature bi-color scheme, which also distinguishes them from wolves.

When you consider the remarkable coat patterns of a Husky and the huge color range of a Chihuahua, your Chihuahua Husky Mix will indeed have a gorgeous coat.

Chihuahua Husky Mix size, height, and weight

It’s not easy to predict the size of a full-grown Chihuahua Husky Mix due to the significant difference between the two breeds. While all Husky Chihuahua Mix puppies look pretty much the same, there’s no telling how big they’ll get.

However, we can get a good idea of how big a Chihuahua Husky Mix full grown can be by checking out the average height and weight of the two breeds:

Chihuahua Husky Mix temperament and personality

Mixing two dogs with opposite personalities can have unpredictable outcomes. Chihuahuas prefer staying on laps and aren’t very curious.

Huskies get bored quickly and like to escape whatever enclosure they’re in.

Their mix will likely have a good balance of these tendencies.

However, all combinations aren’t favorable. The Chihuahua can be aggressive and possessive. The Husky can be envious and bossy. These traits can combine to give a stubborn and challenging dog.

That’s why we don’t recommend the Chihuahua Husky Mix to first-time owners.

Do Chihuahua Husky Mixes make good family pets?

The Chihuahua Husky Mix can make a good pet for a family where the kids are a little mature. These dogs don’t have the patience necessary to deal with young children. Their attitude is also questionable.

Chihuahuas and Huskies rank pretty high among aggressive dog breeds, and they need rigorous training to become better behaved.

Their unpredictable personalities are another reason why these dogs should go with experienced dog owners with older kids.

Question of the day: Both Huskies and Chihuahuas are known to be aggressive dogs. So, what about a Husky mix with Great Dane? Check out Great Dane Husky Mix (Complete Guide) to find out if this hybrid dog is also aggressive.

Chihuahua Husky Mix training

Both dogs have some behavioral issues that make training difficult. But if you’ve done this before, you’ll have no trouble getting your Chihuahua Husky Mix to behave better. You can also get expert help with your dog and take them to training classes. However, doing it on your own is a better way.

As with all dogs, training shows the best results when it starts at a young age. Use reward treats wisely and praise your dog with encouragement and belly rubs when he or she gets the command right.

Chihuahua Husky Mix exercise requirement

The ChiHusky needs 30 to 45 minutes of exercise each day to keep its energy level under control. Depending on which parent your Chihuahua Husky takes after, the exercise requirements can be different.

Chihuahuas and Huskies are highly energetic. But the Chihuahua runs out of energy fast, whereas the Husky’s stamina can keep it going for much longer.

In either case, we suggest not going physically overboard with your ChiHusky and keeping physical activity under an hour.

Chihuahua Husky Mix grooming and cleaning

A Chihuahua Husky Mix is a naturally tidy dog that won’t need much cleaning. The frequency of brushing will depend on the dog’s coat—it’ll be higher than the short-coated Chihuahua and lower than the fluffy Husky.

You’ll need to bathe them once in a while to keep their fur nice and clean. But don’t overdo it because you can do damage to the poor dog’s skin. Try using high-quality shampoo designed specifically for dogs to help with odor-causing bacteria on your dog’s coat and skin.

Ear cleaning and teeth brushing are also essential for good health. Use an ear cleaner every week to get rid of excessive earwax buildup, and use dog toothpaste to brush their teeth.

The doggy toothpaste should contain both enzymatic formula and a non-foaming agent. The enzymatic formula in the toothpaste will help to effectively remove plaque, control tartar formation, and keep your Chihuahua Husky Mix’s teeth and gum healthy.

The non-foaming agent in the toothpaste ensures that the toothpaste doesn’t foam and is safe to swallow.

You can also ask your vet regarding your ChiHusky’s oral hygiene since it would likely be different from regular Chihuahuas or Huskies.

Is Chihuahua Husky Mix hypoallergenic?

A Chihuahua Husky Mix is not hypoallergenic. Although Chihuahuas shed minimally, Huskies shed quite a bit. Their mix may not inherit the heavy shedding of their Husky parent, but they still won’t suit people allergic to dog hair.

Chihuahua Husky Mix food and diet

Go for a high-protein dry food for your Chihuahua Husky Mix. Make sure it contains real meat as opposed to filler ingredients like grain and carbs. Some wet dog foods are high in carbohydrates, and although they’re fulfilling, they aren’t high in nutritional value.

We recommend going for plain boiled beef, poultry, or turkey meat. Feed your dog fish meat with caution as it doesn’t suit all canines. Watch out for allergic reactions when trying out a new diet.

Chihuahua Husky Mix common health issues

The Husky is an overall healthy breed, but these dogs have relatively poor genetic diversity and display some health issues seen among inbred dogs.

On the other hand, the Chihuahua owes its health problems to selective breeding and their delicate bodies.

However, most of their health issues get resolved by crossbreeding.

If you have a ChiHusky or another mixed dog breed, and you would like to know what health issues he or she may be most susceptible to, we highly recommend that you have them DNA tested. This can be done at the vet’s office. However, if you have a busy schedule, there’s also an at-home doggy DNA test available that you can use from the comfort of your home.

It’s called the Embark dog DNA test and it features both health detection and breed identification. Within 2 to 3 weeks, you’ll have the results back and it will give you a breakdown of what health issues your canine friends are prone to as well as the breed percentages.

When I used the Embark dog DNA test on my two furry family members, it helped me understand what health issues they were prone to and allowed me to plan ahead.

Although the ChiHusky should be safe from congenital diseases, it’s still important to watch out for the following health conditions.

1. Collapsing trachea

Tracheal collapse is a known ailment in Chihuahuas. The dog’s trachea, or windpipe, is held in shape by rings of cartilage. When these rings break for some reason, the trachea collapses. A collapsed trachea makes breathing difficult, and the dog develops a chronic cough.

2. Patellar luxation

Patellar luxation is when the kneecaps dislocate randomly. Patellar luxation is prevalent among Chihuahuas and other toy breeds with thin bones and delicate joints.

Breeding Chihuahuas with Huskies should solve this issue, and a Chihuahua Husky Mix has a low propensity for patellar luxation.

3. Heart disease

Chihuahuas are known for their susceptibility to several heart diseases. If your Chihuahua Husky Mix has a parent with a history of this issue, there’s a chance the condition will appear in your dog as well. We recommend thoroughly checking the parents’ health history before adopting a Chihuahua Husky Mix.

4. Hypoglycemia

If your ChiHusky is small and inherits the fast metabolism of its Chihuahua parent, there’s a chance for them to be prone to hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is when the dog’s body runs out of blood sugar instantly, often resulting in collapse and loss of consciousness.

5. Ocular diseases

The Siberian Husky has a long history of eye issues, including cataracts, PRA, and glaucoma. Although the chances of your Chihuahua Husky Mix inheriting these issues are low, you should still be on the lookout.

6. Hip dysplasia

Hip dysplasia is when the dog’s hip socket fails to develop correctly. As a result, the femur (thigh bone) doesn’t entirely fit the socket. This condition causes wear and tear on the bone and can lead to loss of functionality.

Chihuahua Husky Mix lifespan

The parent breeds of a Chihuahua Husky Mix live long lives, which is why we can safely say a Chihuahua Husky Mix will have a very long lifespan itself. Expect this dog to last 16-18 years easily.

Husky Chihuahua Mix for adoption

Adoption is an economical option for people who don’t want to spend a fortune buying from high-profile breeders. You also get a pre-house-trained dog, and the experience of training is rewarding.

The downside is that you don’t know what medical issues your dog might have. In any case, here are two rescue centers you can check out when looking for a Husky Chihuahua Mix:

Husky House

Husky House has numerous Siberian Husky Mix dogs to choose from. They frequently update their list of adoptable dogs and provide detailed information on each canine.

Chihuahua Rescue

Chihuahua Rescue and Transport has been rescuing Chihuahuas and their crosses for over 25 years. They make sure to place their dogs in suitable homes and follow up with a home visit whenever someone applies for adoption.

Chihuahua Husky Mix price

The Husky Chihuahua Mix price is more than that of a pure Husky or pure Chihuahua. These dogs are bred using a specialized medical procedure that can be pretty expensive.

Overall, expect to pay $1,000 to $3,000 for a healthy Chihuahua Husky Mix puppy bought from a reputable breeder. Adoption costs way less, and you’d get a ChiHusky for a tenth of the price.

Husky Chihuahua Mix for sale

If you’re looking for a Siberian Husky Chihuahua Mix for yourself, there are benefits of purchasing over adoption.

First of all, you get a young dog with medical tests and socialization training completed. With adoption, you usually get an older dog with an unknown medical history, which can be a problem in the long run.

Rescue dogs also have the potential for behavioral issues that may not occur in a dog that has been raised by humans all its life.

However, be ready to spend a bit more when looking for Husky and Chihuahua Mix for sale. That aside, here are some places where you can find a Husky Chihuahua for sale:

AKC Marketplace:

You may think the AKC only deals in purebred dogs, but the AKC marketplace also has some adorable Chihuahua Mix for sale. A pure Husky should not cost more than $1,000, while pure Chihuahua might cost up to $2,000.

But if you opt for a Husky Chihuahua Mix, you can get one for about $1,000 to $3,000.

Lancaster puppies

You can find adorable and healthy Husky Mix with Chihuahua for sale on Lancaster puppies. They have been raising Husky Chihuahua Mixes for quite a few years. Although the name says “puppies,” they also have adult Chiwawa Husky Mix for sale on their website.

Chihuahua Husky Mix puppies for sale

The benefits of getting a Husky Chihuahua Mix puppy over a grown-up dog are that you get a young dog with medical testing and socialization training completed.

However, be ready to spend a bit more when looking for Husky and Chihuahua Mix puppies. You can check out Lancaster Puppies or Greenfield Puppies to find some adorable and healthy ChiHusky pups.

Similar Husky Chihuahua Mixes and breeds

  • Pomeranian Chihuahua Husky Mix: The Pomeranian Husky Chihuahua Mix is a cross between a purebred Chihuahua and a Pomeranian-Husky mix. Also known as the Pomsky Chihuahua Mix, the resulting hybrid has an expected lifespan of 12 to 16 years and weighs between 10 to 12 pounds on average. The short-tempered Chihuahua Pomeranian Husky Mix can be unfriendly towards strangers and sometimes shows aggression towards children.
  • Chiweenie Husky Mix: The Husky Chiweenie Mix is a cross between a Husky and a Chiweenie dog, which itself is a cross between a Chihuahua and Dachshund. The Husky Chiweenie is vigilant and intelligent but also easily distracted. When it comes to family life, Husky Chiweenies are hard to train.
  • Alaskan Husky Chihuahua Mix: Alaskan Husky and Chihuahua Mix is a cross between an Alaskan Malamute and Husky Mix with a purebred Chihuahua. The dog is even rarer than a Chihuahua Husky Mix. This small dog is very energetic and intelligent but tends to get separation anxiety. This Alaskan Husky Chihuahua Mix is ideal for people who need a compact, docile, hardy, friendly, and easy-to-train pet.

Is a Chihuahua Husky Mix right for me?

The Chihuahua Husky Mix makes a good apartment companion. Mix dogs, like the ChiHusky, are healthier than purebred dogs and carry the best traits of their parents. The only uncertainty with them is their size and body chemistry.

The Chihuahua is tiny and prefers a warm climate, whereas the Husky is large and likes the cold. The result of mixing these two can be unpredictable, so make sure you know what you’re getting into when getting this dog.
