What is a Corgipoo?
A Corgipoo is a cross between a Pembroke Welsh Corgi or Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Miniature or Toy Poodle. The Corgi Poodle Mix is also nicknamed the Corgidoodle by some.
Corgipoo: Parent breeds
The Corgipoo, being the product of two entirely different purebred dogs, will have physical and temperamental qualities that can be hard to predict.
To learn how the Corgipoo will turn out, it is useful to know about the characteristics of the Poodle and the Pembroke or Cardigan Corgi.
The Poodle is one of the most recognizable breeds around. Regardless of their size, they are known for their elegant, curly, and dense hypoallergenic coat. They have a well-proportioned body with long, straight muzzles and hanging, feathery ears. They are intelligent and highly trainable.
The Corgi, on the other hand, can be classified into two breeds – the Pembroke and the Cardigan. Both breeds look similar with large heads, long bodies, and short legs.
What sets the two types of Corgis apart is the tail. The Cardigan Corgi having a long, fox-like tail while the Pembroke Corgi has a docked one.
Both types Corgis are smart and are bred to be herders, but the Cardigan has a more laid-back and reserved personality.
Corgi history
Pembroke Welsh Corgi descended from Spitz-like dogs that were brought by Flemish weavers to Wales during the 12th century. These weavers settled in the Pembrokeshire region where the breed got its name.
The dogs were used by farmers to herd livestock and also to protect their farm from rodents. Both the Pembroke and the Cardigan were considered one breed until the 1930s when their origins were later learned to be different.
The Pembroke Corgis gained prominence during the time of Queen Elizabeth II often seen accompanying the royal on her hikes.
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is the older of the two Corgis. They were brought by the Celts to the Cardiganshire region of Wales more than 2,000 years ago. They are relatives of the Teckel family of dogs which also includes the Dachshund.
Cardigan Corgis are mainly used by farmers to herd livestock and guard the flock at night. The breed was introduced in the United States during the 1930s and was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) a few years later.
Poodle history
The Poodle was believed to have originated in Germany. Their name was probably derived from the German onomatopoeic word âpudelinâ which sounds like the splashing of water.
Waterfowlers found them useful in retrieving ducks from lakes because of their dense, waterproof coats and webbed paws.
Their intelligence and showy coats made them popular among the European nobility and also were found to be adept at searching for truffles.
Poodle vs Corgi
The main difference between Poodle and Corgi is that Poodle is hypoallergenic because they rarely shed while Corgi is not considered hypoallergenic because their thick, double coats that shed throughout the year.
Corgi Poo physical appearance
Since they are a mixed breed, each Corgipoo adult is unique in their physical features. It is really hard to predict how they would turn out once they are adults.
Typically, a Corgipoo would have a long, straight muzzle with a black nose and oval-shaped eyes. The ears can either be erect like the Corgi or hang close to the head like the Poodle.
Some may also exhibit a long tail or a short stump of a tail similar to the Pembroke Corgi.
How big do Corgi Poos get?
Corgi Poos are usually bred with a Toy or Miniature Poodle and not the standard-sized Poodle making them a small-sized breed.
Corgipoo size and height
The Corgi has a height range of 10 to 12 inches while the Toy and Miniature Poodle has a combined height range of 9.4 to 14 inches. Therefore, the Corgipoo size and height fall within the category of small-sized dogs.
Height | |
Male | 10 – 12 inches |
Female | 10 – 12 inches |
Corgipoo weight
Weight | |
Male | 12 – 28 pounds |
Female | 12 – 28 pounds |
Corgipoo full grown
The height and weight of a full grown Corgipoo will reach their peak around their first year of age with some filling out their chests until their second year.
Some full grown Corgipoo adults may appear longer in length compared to their height, but some may also be taller than their other siblings depending on which parent they inherited more of their genes from.
Miniature Corgipoo
Mini Corgipoo is a product of a Miniature Poodle and a Corgi. A mini adult Corgipoo stands at around 11 to 12 inches tall and weighs between 20 and 28 pounds.
Teacup Corgipoo
Corgipoo adults that are less than 10 inches in height can be considered teacups in size. They are usually bred from a Toy Poodle and come out as runts of the litter.
Toy Corgipoo
Toy Corgipoo stands at around 10 inches in height and weighs between 12 and 20 pounds.
Corgipoos coat colors and types
Corgipoos typically resemble the coat of a Poodle which is soft and shaggy with a wiry and waterproof top coat and a soft undercoat.
Since the Poodle and Corgi come in a wide range of colors and patterns, you can expect the Corgipoo to be diverse in coat colors as well. Their coat can be solid in color or have patterns of merle or brindle.

Corgipoo temperament
Corgipoo personality is friendly, affectionate, and fairly energetic. Both of his parents are known for their high intelligence, so it would not be far off to expect a Corgipoo to be highly trainable.
They love to please their owners and would not do well being left alone for long periods of time.
Are Corgipoos good pets?
Yes, Corgipoos are good pets and a great addition to any family because of their loving and trustworthy nature. They get along well with children and rarely show any sign of aggressive behaviors such as biting or lashing out.
However, smaller children, should be supervised when playing with the Corgipoo to prevent any minor accidents due to their small size.
The Corgipoo can also get along well with other pets, especially those they grew up with.
Corgipoo dogs ideal living conditions
Because of their small size, Corgipoos can easily adjust to small apartment living. They can tolerate any type of climate, especially cold weather. However, caution should be taken during the warmer months to prevent them from getting a heat stroke.
Many canine owners will let their Corgipoos roam freely in their backyard during cooler seasons. The ability to roam freely in your yard is not only a great way to keep them busy throughout the day but also is a perfect way to keep them active.
Simply walking, playing, running, jumping, or chasing is a great form of exercise and prevents boredom.
If you do allow your Corgipoo to play in your backyard, make sure your yard is fully fenced-in.
Do note that some towns or counties have zoning laws that prohibit the installation of physical fences. If this is the case, don’t fret! A great alternative would be to install a wireless dog fence which will also keep your K9 friends safe and contained within your yard.
Many pet owners prefer the invisible doggy fence because it is flexible and adaptable to any and all types of terrains, including mountainous and hilly terrains and is more cost-efficient than the physical fences.
So you can now still keep your pups safe without compromising on that beautiful and scenic mountain view in your backyard.
If you do allow your four-legged friends to play in your backyard throughout the day, it would be helpful to get an electronic dog door which will allow your pups to head outside and come back into the house whenever they wish.
What’s great about the automatic doggy door is that it is programmable and K9 owners can set curfew hours. This way your furry companions can play outside and get some fresh air and sun during the day while staying safe indoors at night.
So whether you work from home or at the office, your pups can still head outside and catch some sun without needing you to open or close the door behind them.
Corgipoo dog training
Corgipoos are intelligent with a bit of an independent streak mixed in due to their Corgi heritage. You should show firmness when training them coupled with positive reinforcement, like dog treats and praises.
Keep a daily training routine during their puppy years in order to instill good behavior. Otherwise, they could easily sense your inconsistencies and may show some stubbornness in following orders.

Corgie Poo exercise requirement
Corgi Poos need at least an hour of daily exercise that can be split into two sessions. A walk around the neighborhood or a game of fetch are great activities you can do with your Corgipoo.
When walking your Corgipoo, be sure to use either a retractable dog leash or a rope dog leash so you have full control of your pup while still allowing him the space to walk and explore the environment around him.
You can also incorporate mentally stimulating games by letting them play with interactive toys that they can explore, sniff, and lick to exercise their brains.
Corgiepoo grooming and cleaning
The maintenance of a Corgipooâs coat depends largely on the type of coat they have. On one hand, Corgis are double-coated with medium-length top coats and dense undercoats that need to be brushed several times weekly to control their shedding.
Poodle, on the other hand, needs to be brushed regularly to control their matting because of their dense, curly hair.
A Corgipoo with curlier hairs may also need to visit the groomer every six months or so to maintain his coat.
Brushing
As discussed above, Corgis are double-coated with medium length top coats and dense undercoats that need to be brushed several times weekly to control their shedding.
Meanwhile Poodles need to be brushed regularly to control their matting because of their dense, curly hairs.
For Corgi Poos with straight furs that shed frequently, a double-sided bristle brush is a perfect tool to use. The tightly packed bristles can easily remove loose hairs and also stimulate their skin.
Those with curlier hairs would do well with a slicker brush that can remove the tangles and matting on the coat.
Bathing
Corgipoos should be bathed only when their coat starts to smell or when there is excessive accumulation of dirt.
That’s because frequent bathing can strip their skin of the natural oils that keep their fur in good condition.
When bathing your pooch, be sure to use a mild dog shampoo with natural ingredients to prevent any sort of irritation. Never use products meant for human consumption for these usually have strong ingredients that can harm a dogâs skin and coat.
Teeth Brushing
Oral care is one of the most neglected parts of dog grooming. Having healthy teeth and gums can prolong any dogâs life and give them the quality of life they deserve.
Brushing their teeth 3 to 4 times weekly is the minimal recommendation to keep plaque and tartar from accumulating. Use a dog toothpaste with an enzymatic formula or those with organic ingredients. Never use human toothpaste for these usually have xylitol as one of the ingredients which is toxic to all dogs.
Nail Trimming
Maintaining short nails is another essential grooming requirement. When you start to hear the clickety-click sound of your puppy’s nails against the hardwood floor, it is time to trim their nails.
You don’t want their nails to grow too long because long nails can actually affect the way your pup walks and it can also affect their mood and behavior.
When it’s time to trim your pup’s nails, we highly recommend using a dog nail grinder because it features a whisper-quiet motor and a precise diamond drum bit grinder. This is great for dogs who are sensitive to the loud clipping sound. The dog nail grinder is also great for avoiding clipping into the quick.
Ear Cleaning
Check your Corgipooâs ears weekly for any wax or dirt accumulation. Those with hanging ears should be checked more frequently for these are susceptible to fungal infections due to moisture retention.
You can use a cotton ball or damp cloth to remove any dirt, but be sure to dry the inside of the ears thoroughly.
For tough buildups, a dog ear-cleaning solution can be applied by squeezing a few drops into the ear canal. Massage the ears gently at the base to spread the solution. Let your Corgipoo shake his head, then wipe with a cotton or cloth on the insides of the ear being careful not to go too deeply.
Here is a table of the grooming needs and frequency for your Corgipoo:
Grooming Needs | Grooming Frequency |
Brushing | 3 to 4x weekly |
Bathing | 1 – 2x monthly |
Ear Cleaning | Check weekly |
Nail Trimming | As needed |
Teeth Brushing | 3 to 4x weekly |
Is a Corgipoo hypoallergenic?
It depends on which parent the Corgipoos inherited their coat from. Hypoallergenic Corgipoo are the ones with denser and curlier hairs, while those with straight top coats with a thick undercoat tend to be less hypoallergenic.

Do Corgipoos shed?
Corgipoo shedding is generally low because of their Poodle parentage. Those with curlier coats tend to shed minimally but may form matting quickly if not brushed regularly.

Corgipoo food and diet
Adult Corgipoos require at least 1.5 to 2 cups of food daily that should be split into 2 to 3 meals. Choose a premium dry dog food that is packed full of nutrients and is well-balanced. The doggy food should also contain high quality proteins for strong muscles.
Supplements, like chondroitin and glucosamine, can also help to support their bones and joints, especially if they have short legs.
Corgipoo health issues
Designer dog breeds like Corgipoo are believed to be healthier than their parents.
Still, a Corgi Poodle Mix can inherit some of the health problems that are commonly associated with his parents.
But, advancements in the field of veterinary medicine make it possible for dog owners to learn in advance what these gene-specific illnesses may be through an easy-to-use and reliable DNA testing kit that can be done at home.
Here are 7 of those health issues:
1. Allergies
Corgipoos can suffer from skin allergies brought about by food and environmental factors such as molds and mildews. The common signs are skin redness and severe itching.

2. Hip Dysplasia
This is an orthopedic problem that is brought about by the malformation in the hip joint where the ball and the socket do not grow in unison. The signs of hip dysplasia are limping and hesitancy to run and play.
3. Addisonâs Disease
This disease stems from the reduced production of corticosteroid hormones by the adrenal glands. The signs you need to watch out for are increased water intake and frequent urination.
4. Thyroid Issues
The issue can either be hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, both of which involve the production of the thyroid hormones which play a major role in metabolism and the proper functioning of the bodyâs organs.
5. Canine Degenerative Myelopathy
Canine degenerative myelopathy is a progressive disease affecting the nerves of the spinal cord. The affected Corgipoo finds it difficult to get up and may experience trembling of the rear legs.
6. Canine Obesity
Both the Corgis and the Poodles are active dogs, hence, they have the tendency to overeat. This can lead to obesity and other issues such as diabetes.
7. Cystinuria
This is a genetic disorder that prevents the affected dogs from filtering out their urine with cystine. This can result in stone formation in the bladder and kidneys.
Corgipoo lifespan
You can enjoy the company of a Corgipoo for about 12 to 14 years.
