My dad loves beef Brisket. To spice up the meat, he would add tons of seasoning and spice to it. Once it’s ready to eat, my dogs would run over to our dining room table and ask for some with their puppy eyes. My dad is aware that not all human food is good for dogs so he asked me if Brisket is safe for doggy consumption which inspired me to write this article.

Can dogs eat Brisket? Yes and No. Although Brisket meat is not toxic to dogs, it is high in fats and spices so it’s best to avoid feeding your dog Brisket regularly. It doesn’t matter if Brisket is plain or seasoned, both are not safe for doggy consumption. The meat may be tough for your dogs to digest and the doggy guts may have a hard time processing it. Due to this, it’s best to feed Brisket to your pooch occasionally and in moderation.

When it comes to Brisket meat, yes, dogs can have a little bit of Brisket meat. Brisket meat by itself will not harm your pooch. If the Brisket meat cut carries bone fragments, then it is dangerous for dogs, however, Brisket meat is usually boneless.

Since Brisket meat is rich in fats, make sure you are not feeding it to your furry friends regularly. If your pooch does not have a very active lifestyle, they don’t need too much fat in their diet.

Brisket contains strong, load-bearing muscles, making it denser than most other cuts. This chewy meat can be too much for old, sick, or very young dogs.

What is Brisket?

Brisket is a thick piece of lightly seasoned, smoked, and slow-cooked meat usually served in barbecues.

What is Beef Brisket?

Beef brisket is the cut of meat that you can prepare in lots of different ways.

Where does Brisket come from?

Brisket is made from a large and heavy cut of beef from the lower chest area of the cow. It’s a popular dish in the southern USA.

How do you prepare a Brisket?

First, rub the Beef brisket with spices. The ingredients and their proportion vary, but the usual elements are onion, garlic, pepper, salt, and olive oil. Then slow-cook the meat for 4 to 12 hours or until it’s tender. Cut the brisket into thin slices and serve with sauces of your choice.

How do you prepare a Beef Brisket?

You can use Beef brisket in many dishes other than the famous slow-cooked variety. Many restaurants use pulled brisket shreds in burgers and sandwiches. In the subcontinent, a spicy curry called “nihari” is made from Beef brisket chunks. Cured brisket, also called corned beef, is prepared by curing brisket with salt and spices.

Is beef Brisket good for dogs?

If you’ve prepared the Brisket in its traditional form, it probably contains salt, pepper, garlic, onion, and various spices. While humans find all these ingredients delectable, they can do nasty things to dogs. Here are some reasons why.

Contains high salt content that can cause salt poisoning in dogs

A generous amount of salt goes into preparing a Brisket. While salt is safe for dogs in small quantities, an excess of it can lead to troubling side effects. Too much salt can even cause sodium-ion poisoning in dogs.

Excessive salt consumption can lead to:

  • Dehydration.
  • Muscle spasms.
  • Elevated blood pressure.
  • Heart troubles.
  • Kidney diseases.
  • Sodium poisoning.

Handy Hints: When it comes to your dog’s food and diet, it’s best to avoid feeding them salty food such as Tamales that is packed full of salt and other seasonings.

Pepper can pack a punch and irritate the dog’s throat

Black pepper is a strong spice that can irritate a dog’s throat and nose if ingested or inhaled. A little pepper isn’t toxic, but it can bother the dog a lot in large quantities. The pepper in the Brisket is enough to cause the following:

  • Uncontrollable sneezing.
  • Irritation of mouth, throat, and rectum.
  • Indigestion.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Stomach pain.

Garlic and onion are pure poison to dogs

Onion and garlic are perfectly safe for humans. But for dogs, they’re almost lethal. Onion and garlic contain a chemical substance that destroys red blood cells in dogs, leading to anemia. After eating onion or garlic, your furry family member may experience:

  • Weakness.
  • Stomach distress.
  • Itchy skin.
  • Anemia.
  • Asthma.
  • Liver damage.

Spices can burn your dog’s throat

Spices are, well, spicy, and that’s one taste our canine companions don’t enjoy. For dogs, all food should be as bland as possible. Feeding them spicy foods can lead to:

  • Excessive thirst.
  • Burning of the nose and throat.
  • Gas.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Stomach pain.

Is plain Brisket good for dogs?

Since Brisket contains potentially toxic ingredients for dogs, one may think plain Brisket is a safer option. Unfortunately, brisket isn’t all safe for your canine buddy — even if it’s bland. These are the reasons why.

High-fat content can cause canine obesity

is red meat bad for dogs

The Brisket contains a generous amount of fat. Like humans, dogs should only eat as much fat as their body requires.

If your canine friends are hardworking or highly active, they will need lots of fats to provide the extra calories. This also goes for mommy dogs who need fats to make milk.

On the other hand, dogs that are old or have a sedentary lifestyle shouldn’t eat too much fat. Excessive fat consumption can lead to:

  • Laziness.
  • Weight gain.
  • Cardiac issues.
  • Diabetes.
  • Pancreatitis.

Chewy meat is difficult for dogs to digest

Brisket contains the strongest muscles in the cow’s body, which explains its tough meat. The meat isn’t just hard to chew but also difficult to digest. This goes especially for dogs that are small, too old, too young, or unaccustomed to tough foods. Eating such meat can cause:

  • Indigestion.
  • Vomiting.
  • Choking.
  • Stomachache.

Sharp bone fragments can cause mouth and throat injury in dogs

Although it’s uncommon, Brisket can have bone fragments. You may think dogs love bones, but that doesn’t go for small, sharp bone pieces. These bone fragments can cause:

  • Gum injury.
  • Damage to the esophagus.
  • Internal bleeding.
  • Digestive tract injury.

Is it safe for dogs to have smoked Brisket?

is smoked food healthy for dogs
is smoked meat healthy for dogs

No, it is not safe for dogs to have smoked Brisket. Smoked Brisket contains seasonings such as salt, pepper, onion, garlic, and spices. Salt, pepper, and spices can cause hypertension, sodium poisoning, and digestive distress in dogs.

Additionally, garlic and onion are poisonous for dogs and must never be present in their food.

Handy Hints: Avoid food that contains onion and garlic seasonings such as Potato Salad because even a tiny amount of these seasonings can negatively affect your dog’s health.

When shouldn’t you feed a Brisket to your dog?

Brisket can be very fatty and harmful for dogs suffering from heart disease or obesity. Old and inactive dogs also don’t need that much fat in their diet and must refrain from eating Brisket.

If not prepared well, Brisket may be too leathery to chew and digest — even for a dog. This can lead to stomachache and vomiting. That’s why you shouldn’t feed your pooch Brisket if it seems too tough.

While commercially sold Brisket doesn’t contain any bones, that’s not always the case. This can be dangerous, as sharp bone fragments can damage the dog’s digestive tract. Never feed your dog Brisket if it has bones in it.

Does Brisket provide nutritional value to your dogs?

Yes, Brisket, being meat, is packed with protein. Dogs need lots of protein in their daily diet, and beef is a convenient way to ensure they meet their quota. Brisket also contains zinc, selenium, iron, and vitamins B3, B6, and B12.

Unfortunately, the fatty and dense meat keeps Brisket from being an ideal food for dogs. It’s best for dogs to get their protein, essential minerals, and vitamins from other dog-friendly meat options like chicken.

What happens if my dog ate a Brisket?

If your pooch ate Brisket seasoned with toxic ingredients, it is crucial that you call your vet or the local poison helpline immediately. Meanwhile, ask your vet if you should get your furry friends to vomit or if it’s best to bring them in for a checkup. Your vet may ask you to bring your pups in so they can properly administer the appropriate treatment to get the toxins out of their bodies.

Salt-cured Brisket carries a high amount of sodium. So watch out for symptoms of sodium poisoning and call the vet immediately if you observe any unusual behavior.

If your canine companion seems in pain and has a stiff stomach, he may be having trouble digesting the leathery Brisket meat. Put your dog on a plain diet and give him plenty of fluids while he recovers.

Symptoms to watch for

Brisket can be hard to digest. Plus, it is coated with salt and other spices that may cause stomach upset. Lastly, additives like onion and garlic are toxic to dogs and can cause life-threatening symptoms.

Symptoms of garlic and onion poisoning are:

  • Pale gums.
  • Breathing trouble.
  • Vomiting.
  • Reduced hunger.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Tiredness.
  • Reddish urine.

Brisket is sometimes cured in brine, and excessive consumption may cause sodium poisoning. Symptoms include:

  • Excessive urination.
  • Fever.
  • Muscle spasm.
  • Weakness.
  • Convulsions.
  • Dizziness.

Handy Hints: Instead of fatty food, give your pooch some healthier dog snack options like sunflower seeds. Check out our article on Can Dogs Eat Sunflower Seeds to learn how you can add this seed to your canine’s diet.

Treatments if your dog has poisoning from accidentally eating Brisket

Dog owners should approach the vet as soon as their furry friends eat something with onion or garlic. While a small amount isn’t toxic, moderate-to-large quantities of onion and garlic consumption can cause the destruction of red blood cells in dogs.

Treatments include flushing the stomach and inducing vomiting using an emetic. Your pooch may also need to stay under observation until he recovers.

If the Brisket was salty, your canine pups might show signs of dehydration. Giving them water and other electrolytes will help keep them hydrated. IV fluids and electrolytes can help in case of sodium poisoning.

Brisket alternatives that are canine-friendly and safe

Now that we know that Brisket probably isn’t the best way to get meat in your dog’s belly, here are some safe, healthy, and nutritious alternatives:

  • Chicken: It is easy on the tummy and full of protein. Plus, chicken bones aren’t hard enough to harm your pooch. Make sure to cook the chicken thoroughly as raw chicken can carry diseases.
  • Beef mince: Beef mince is inexpensive, safe, and easy to eat. It’s also one of the most common ingredients in dog food, and you can feed it to your dog daily.
  • Turkey: Turkey is light on the tummy and is protein-dense. Also, turkeys are fed organic and natural diets, making them more nutrient-rich than chicken.
  • Fish: Fish like salmon, cod, and sardines are rich in omega-3 and other vital nutrients, along with high-quality protein. However, fish bones can be very sharp. Always debone fish meat before feeding it to your dog.
  • Organ: Organ meat may look gross to you, but it’s a delicacy for your pooch. Their nutritional value is very high for their cost. However, keep in mind that organ meat can be quite fatty.

As dog owners ourselves, we prefer to feed our pups this canine-friendly dog treat if they are craving a meat snack:

So, can dogs eat Brisket?

While beef is a perfectly safe food for dogs, it is best cooked plain and sans the fat. Brisket is often seasoned with spices and toxic ingredients that can have unwanted consequences for your furry friends. That’s why you should avoid feeding Brisket to your pooch.
