Chihuahua Mix with Doberman: Parent breeds

The Doberman Pinscher and Chihuahua Mix is the offspring of two very different parent breeds. The Doberman Pinscher is a large, strong, athletic canine, while the Chihuahua is a tiny, fragile toy breed. Despite their differences, these two breeds can make an amazing hybrid.

Let’s have a look at each parent’s breed history.

Doberman history

Doberman Pinscher vs Chihuahua

In the late 1800s, a German tax collector named Louis Dobermann wanted a brave and fierce yet loyal canine companion to protect him from aggressors.

He mixed several breeds to create such a pet, including the German Pinscher, the Rottweiler, the Greyhound, and the Black and Tan Terrier. The Doberman Pinscher was officially recognized as a breed in 1908.

The modern Doberman excels in numerous job roles, including personal protection, law enforcement, search and rescue, and guide work.

They are also popular as family pets due to their intelligence and even temperament.

Chihuahua history

The Chihuahua is the smallest canine breed in the world. These small furballs originated in Mexico, but their exact history is unknown.

Some believe that the Chihuahua is a descendant of the Techichi, a tiny, mute pet of the Toltec people of Mexico. Others believe that the Chihuahua is a descendant of the Chinese Crested dog.

Chihuahuas are a part of Mexican culture, and you’d often find them as mascots for Mexican cuisine and products. Chihuahuas gained celebrity pet status after being featured in movies, advertisements, and reality shows as the companion of choice for the wealthy and famous.

Doberman vs Chihuahua

The main difference between Doberman and Chihuahua is that Doberman is a large, strong, and athletic pooch while Chihuahua is a tiny toy dog breed.

As we can see, the Doberman and Chihuahua are completely different from one another in terms of size, physique, and energy level.

The Doberman is an active, athletic pet that needs plenty of exercises, while the Chihuahua is a small, delicate pup who prefers sitting in his human’s lap. Chihuahuas are known to be velcro dogs while Doberman Pinschers are not.

Despite their differences, these two breeds can make a great mix pet. The Doberman is a loyal and friendly pup who is intelligent and easy to train.

At the same time, the Chihuahua is a confident and independent pooch known for his affection and boldness.

With both breeds in the mix, you can expect a loyal, friendly, and intelligent pet that’s also confident and independent.

Mixed breed canines can take after either parent. Considering the vast size difference between the parents, a Chihuahua Mixed With Doberman Pinscher could be anywhere from 7 to 60 pounds and around 8 to 16 inches tall.

Doberman Chihuahua Mix coat colors and types

Just like his parents, the Chihuahua Doberman Mix usually has a short, smooth coat that sheds moderately all year.

Although Chihuahuas can come in long-haired coats too, the gene is recessive, and you likely won’t find any long hair on your Chihuahua Doberman Mix.

The Chihuahua and Doberman Mix coat colors can vary greatly, as they can take after either parent breed.

They may have any color or combination of shades present in either breed. Common colors are black, white, rust, blue, chocolate, cream, fawn, and bicolor.

Chihuahua Doberman Mix temperament and personality

When you mix two different breeds, you never know exactly what you’re going to get. The Chihuahua Doberman Pinscher Mix is no exception. This breed can inherit the best (or worst) traits of both parent breeds.

To understand the Doberhuahua’s temperament, it’s important to know a little bit about each parent breed.

Chihuahua temperament

The Chihuahua is a small, independent fur buddy with high intelligence and a stubborn streak. They are confident and fearless, which sometimes leads to aggression towards other canines or people.

They are loyal and loving to their family but can be suspicious of strangers. They typically bond with one family member and can get jealous of other pets in the home.

Fun Fact: Chihuahuas usually show their teeth when they’re trying to tell strangers or other animals to back away. Check out Chihuahua Bite Force PSI to find out how strong their bite force is.

Doberman temperament

The Doberman is a large, muscular canine with a lot of energy. They are intelligent and easy to train, but they can also be quite dominant and aggressive. They like activity and have no trouble playing all day. They are loyal and friendly to their family but can be wary of strangers.

Does Chihuahua Doberman Mix make great family pets?

The Doberman Chihuahua Mix’s family-friendliness would depend on which genes he inherited from his parents.

If he takes after the Doberman, he’ll likely be a great family pet who is loyal and protective of his family. If he takes after the Chihuahua, he may be less tolerant of other pets and people and may not be as good with children. They also tend to be pretty talkative and may annoy your neighbors with their incessant barking.

Are Doberman Chihuahua Mixes aggressive dogs?

Chihuahuas are among the least tolerant canine breeds, and Dobermans can also be quite aggressive. If your Doberman Chiwawa Mix inherits the Doberman’s tendencies, he’s likely to be more territorial and protective than outright aggressive.

However, they may take after a Chihuahua’s temperament and have a bossy attitude. This could lead to aggression without proper training and socialization.

Do Chihuahua Doberman Mix bark a lot?

Yes, the Doberman Chiwawa Mix can be quite vocal, especially if he takes after the Chihuahua parent. They may bark at strangers or other animals, which can be annoying to your neighbors, especially if you live in an apartment setting.

You can control your fur buddy’s barking by proper training and socialization. Barking can also signify pent-up energy, so make sure your pooch gets adequate exercise and mental activities.

Doberman Mix with Chihuahua training

Since the Chiwawa Doberman Mix can take after either parent breed, it’s important to start training and socializing early.

The best way to train any pup is with positive reinforcement. This means rewarding your puppy for good behavior with treats, praises, or playtime.

Dog owners should also avoid punishment as it can lead to confusion and anxiety. Keep your commands and rewards consistent, and your pup will soon be responding like a champ!

Handy Hint: Training your pups at an early age is easier and they’ll learn to feel comfortable and know what is normal. Obedience, behavioral, and socialization training are all important. But first, you’ll want to start with potty training. Check out Chihuahua Potty Training (10 Easy Steps) to learn more.

Doberman Pinscher Chihuahua Mix exercise requirement

Although daily activity is a must for any canine, it’s best to avoid high-intensity exercise with a half Chihuahua half Doberman Mix. This pup may inherit the Chihuahua’s breathing and temperature regulation issues, so playing in the hot sun or strenuous activities may be risky.

Doberman Chihuahua Mix living conditions

The Doberman Chihuahua Mix can live in either an apartment or a house as long as he gets enough exercise.

If your pup takes after the Doberman, he may need a little more space to run around, but if he takes after the Chihuahua, he’ll be just fine in a smaller area.

These pups won’t have the best cold tolerance, so an ideal household will have central heating to keep them comfortable.

Doberman Chihuahua Mix common health issues

Mixed canines tend to be healthier than purebred dogs, but the Doberman Chihuahua Mix can still inherit some health conditions from their parent breeds.

If you want to know the health issues your furry companions may be susceptible to, we recommend that you consult with your dog’s breeder or vet.

Your dog’s breeder will know any potential health problems your pup (mixed breed or not) is susceptible to based on the health of his or her parents.

However, if none of these options are possible, you could also use a dog DNA test. Personally, I’ve used Embark dog DNA test on my two canine family members. I like that this dog DNA test can provide breed identification and health detection.

When the test results came back two weeks later, I was pleasantly surprised to see how accurate the results for the breed ID were.

Additionally, the health detection allowed me to better understand what health issues my two dogs are prone to and how I can help to better take care of them.

For now, let’s go over some common health issues the Doberman Chihuahua Mix is susceptible to. These include:

1. Hip dysplasia

Hip dysplasia is a genetic condition and can cause pain and stiffness in the hips. It’s a hereditary condition that doesn’t go away; however, medications and surgeries can help.

2. Respiratory problems

Chihuahuas are prone to respiratory problems, so your pup may inherit this tendency. Be sure to watch for signs of difficulty breathing, such as panting or coughing.

3. Intervertebral disc disease

This condition can cause pain, weakness, and paralysis. It’s important to get a vet to check your pup if you notice any symptoms of this disease.

4. Patellar luxation

The kneecap pops out of place in this condition. It can sometimes cause pain and difficulty walking, but it usually isn’t painful.

5. Eye problems

It’s important to regularly have a vet examine your pet’s eyes. Some common eye issues include cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal detachment.

Doberman Chihuahua Mix commercial

Perhaps the most famous Doberman Chihuahua Mix depiction is the Doberhuahua Super Bowl Commercial from 2014. The ad featured a fictitious and quite horrific cross of a Doberman and a Chihuahua.

The CGI Doberhuahua dog had a petite Chihuahua body and a disproportionately large Doberman head. The Doberhuahua Commercial showed the pet raising havoc in the city, with people questioning the sanity of whoever decided to cross the two breeds.

However, actual Doberman Chihuahua Mixes are not nearly as horrid or destructive as the Super Bowl Commercial Doberhuahua. In fact, they’re much better-behaved and quite adorable so don’t let this commercial give you the wrong impression of the Doberhuahua or scare you away.

Is the Doberman Chihuahua Mix right for me?

The Doberman Chihuahua Mix can be stubborn and jealous and need plenty of training to be less vocal. Temperament-wise, they can be quite unpredictable. If you understand the needs of this breed and are willing to put in the work, then a Doberman Chihuahua Mix could make a great addition to your life.
